Kick your mood and your immune system up a notch with this bright and sunny juice

Winter citrus season is such a luxury in the Midwest. I do my best to eat in-season from our garden and surrounding local farms, but there’s always a trip or two to the grocery store in the winter that catch me craving that gorgeous and colorful California citrus. Use whatever citrus looks best at the store for this recipe. I’m in love with the peachy keen color of this juice from the mixture of blood oranges and ginger. Enjoy right away to get that foamy top from the fresh pressed juice.

This juice would make a lovely non-alcoholic alternative to my Paloma Cocktail for those that are abstaining.

Tips for making fresh pressed juice

  • Go for different bright colors of citrus. I love using blood oranges mixed with regular Valencia oranges. Lemon is a really nice addition, too. It’s like mixing paint colors for that beautiful ombre blend.
  • The ginger definitely packs a major kick, which is awesome for your immune system. If you can’t handle the spice, use a lot less, or opt for fresh tumeric instead.
  • I don’t think this juice needs any extra sweetener, but you could definitely add a little honey or maple syrup if you like.
  • If you don’t have a juicer (I don’t blame you, these machines are beasts), you can blend all the ingredients together in a high-powered blender with a little water pour through a fine mesh sieve. It won’t be exactly the same as using a juicer, but it can totally work just fine.
  • You can make a big batch of juice for the week ahead if you don’t want to bust out the juicer everyday (again, I don’t blame you). However, if you do it this way, you’ll start to lose some nutrients throughout the week. The freshest juice is the healthiest juice!

Ingredients

  • 4 inches fresh ginger
  • 4 small valencia oranges
  • 2 medium blood oranges

Instructions

  • Wash and roughly chop the ginger. No need to peel.
  • Peel and half the oranges.
  • Run everything together through an electric juicer and enjoy immediately.
